Afternoon Tea With Xpose

Anyway, the first face we saw when we arrived in to the cosy (and by that we mean stuffy) room – equipped with miniature cream cakes and gallons of forbidden cocktails - was that of Deano off EastEnders. That was a surprise and a half. Here’s how the chat went.

Matt D’angelo: *Strolls over, cocktail in hand* Sorry about earlier (we were about to start our chat when he was asked to pose for pictures with the Xpose ladies beside St Steven’s Green. As you can see, this involved them lifting him aloft. We saw this with our own eyes thanks to Matt’s mate who was sniggering and pointing out the window. I then started guzzling what turned out to be Matt’s glass of water, covering the rim with lip grease. He took that quite well upon his return). So who is it your work for again, darling?

S: No worries at all. It’s an entertainment website called entertainment.ie, so we cover TV and Soap previews, film reviews…

M: Any fashion? Would you like me to talk about my shirt (which was rather snug).

S: Nah, we shall let the pictures speak for themselves, very dashing…

M: Why thank you.

S: So how did they actually get you hoisted up sideways at the side of the road? Did they get you by the ankles or…

M: I’ve no idea. D’you know what, we flew in really late, I was kind’ve tired, they caught me off guard and, I dunno, hands everywhere, my head, my ankles…

S: Glenda could’ve just thrown you over her shoulder.

M: Yeah, Glenda could’ve picked me up on her own!

S: She is a striking Amazonian lady.

M: She is an Amazonian QUEEN! She’s incredible.

S: OK – on with the questions. Firstly, very glad to see you move on into Hustle. Given you’re sharp appearance today (mainly the hair) , it’s more your style. For those who haven’t watched it on BBC, can you tell us a little about your character Sean?

M: Sean is… it’s quite easy to explain and also quite difficult to explain…

S: We’ll have the easy version.

M: OK, a man called Tony Jordan who created Hustle and who writes the main plot lines for EastEnders (you’re a marked man, Tony *shakes fist*) - I met Tony on EastEnders, we became good friends, and my character on EastEnders, we both felt he never really -

S: Evolved?

M: Yeah, evolved. It’s a fantastic show, but I personally think my performance and my character, you know I didn’t do myself or the show justice. I didn’t do anything extraordinary. It was a lot of pressure, I was only eighteen.

S: Was it down to the writers?

M: It was partly script and it was partly where does the character go and in the end it was best for us to leave. I love them all to bits, and I love EastEnders - it’s an entity in itself, best soap by far (?!). But Tony wrote this character, Sean, to - not replace but to add to the holes left by Marc (Warren, played Danny Blue) and Jamie (Murray, played Stacie Monroe). He wrote Sean for me and he’s basically the exact opposite to what I did in EastEnders; if there was a fight on he wouldn’t run away, he’d have it, he could handle himself, he’s got no family apart from his sister. He’s streetwise, he’s smart, he’s a con artist… he’s like Deano’s older, cooler, half-American brother - d’you know what I mean? Like a suave version. So that’s really where we went with it… I’m sorry, I’m not sure if I answered the question!

S: No, you kind’ve did.

M: Yeah Sean, he needs to learn a lot more, he’s very bottom of the ladder… but over the series he learns and he’ll continue to learn and become Ash’s apprentice.

S: So that means you’re going to be in Hustle for the foreseeable future.

M: Yeah, we shoot again in July.

S: What series is it on now?

M: I think this is the sixth, this is my second.

S: And I hear you’re filming a pilot called, eh, Fried Brain Sandwich.

M: Yeah, we shoot at the end of the month.

S: *whispers* Is it about drugs?

M: Uh, no it’s not actually.

S: Is that not what people are going to assume? Or is that just my sordid mind…

M: I think it’s just your drug abused brain.

S: Addled. Years of it.

M: No, it’s about a stand up comedian who’s trying to make it into the big leagues and fighting their own demons. And I plaaaaay… I’m not sure what name they’ve even given him yet, so you’ll have to wait and see… I’m a big fan of stand up comedians, so I’ve merged in a bit of Ricky Gervais – with a kind’ve clipped delivery – and he uses other people’s material – very interesting.

S: Fantastic. We’ll, he wouldn’t be the first - there’s the Dennis Leary / Bill Hicks situation, and many more… That’d be a very stressful role to play ’cause most comedians turn out to be rather dark, disturbed sorts.

M: Yeah it’s going to be particularly stressful for me as I’ve got my first topless scene in it. I walk into the shower.

S: Again, fantastic (peers at torso between the gapes in his shirt… wonders will he go down the waxing route)

M: Yeah, but the thing is, I’ve only just started with my trainer… so, give it three months.

S: Yeah, but won’t you be fine, what with your stint on Strictly Come Dancing?

M: I’ve put it all back on!!!

S: So you’re not keeping up with the dancing then…

M: I’m not, I’m too busy shooting, and I’ve been busy with the play, just finished playing Hal in Loot (in February).

S: I know you’re obviously used to live audiences given your appearance on Strictly -

M: Yeah but it was my first play!

S: Exactly, so were you cacking it, or did you thrive off the live element?

M: Truthfully, I was more nervous with the dancing cause it’s not my job, I never really wanted to be a dancer, I did that just to challenge myself randomly in another, you know, entertainment…

S: Realm?

M: Avenue, yeah, so I thought why not give it a go, I’ve done worse things with my time.

S: Sure Kara Tointon is doing it now.

M: Who is?

S: Dawn from EastEnders.

M: Kara did a special, I don’t know if she’s doing the real one.

S: yeah, she’s doing the real one now.

M: I try to get a lot of my friends to do it, yeah. Well she’d be good at it. But with the play it was different nerves, I was nervous that people weren’t going to give me a chance, that they wouldn’t review me fairly.

S: That they’d have a preconception cause of Deano?

M: Yeah and the fact that I did Strictly Come Dancing, and I hadn’t done Hustle then, and I hadn’t been out there. So I thought people were going to be slightly biased and they’d be waiting for me to fail, to have a pop at me for no reason - which some people did! But it was my first play and it was an all star cast and I did my very best. Got some good reviews, got some bad reviews - but would I do it again? Definitely. Going to do a lot more theatre from now on and learn. I mean I’m only 21 and I’ve still got a long way to go. I’m not saying I deserve an Olivier yet…

S: HAH!

M: But you know, I’m just getting started.

S: You have decades left in you. So, do you know exactly what you’re going to be doing at the Xpose Live extravaganza?

M: I’m not even sure if I’m gonna make it, ’cause we’re shooting Fried Brain Sandwich…

S: Aaaaah.

M: And I’m also shooting another couple of episodes of another BBC drama, just a little cameo, well not a cameo, a part. Two episodes. And that’s gonna be…

S: Around the same date?

M: A lot of stunt work. And yeah, we’re gonna see if I can make it. Acting comes first. All the fun with the gorgeous Xpose girls comes very much second, unfortunately.

S: Well, Calum Best will be there to woo the ladies.

M: Well, I think in my absence, I think maybe.

S: Maybe he’ll throw Glenda over his shoulder.

M: Uh huh huh huh!

S: Well, thank you very much for your time Mat and good luck with the stunt work.

We also got to have a banter with the lovely Lorraine Keane. Here’s a wee smippet.

S: Lorraine, the first time I met you was years ago in Windmill Lane. You were trying to get inside to see Kylie Minogue, that was me on reception.

L: Oh GOD, was that you! Ah the glamorous life of showbiz, I was hanging around outside Windmill for about 8 hours that day. And when I finally left to go to the loo – the bathroom – she arrived out.

S: She arrived the first day, when all the press was there, in very Charlene from Neighbours mode and the following day, when no one turned up, she was glammed up to bits.

L: AH she realised, that’s so funny!

S: So from then ’til now; 2009 has been a cracking year for you. You won Ireland’s most stylish lady…

L: Oh that too! I was going to say 2008 was better ’cause that’s when Xpose really started, at the end of 2007.

S: It’s all go. As well as being hailed most stylish, you’re also nominated for Favourite Female TV presenter at Saturday’s TV Now Awards. Who are you up against?

L: I don’t know, isn’t it terrible. I heard I was nominated and, to be honest with you I haven’t even looked at the categories as I’m hosting the event. So I’m kind’ve concentrating on that gig… But I keep telling people "I am going to win", which they must think is really cocky. But no, I’ll be opening the envelope so no matter what name is on that card I’ll be saying "Lorraine Keane!" And all the organisers will be going *drops jaw* and whispering!

S: So, are you bricking it (hosting the awards). How do you prepare for these things or are you used to it?

L: Well, you don’t ever get used to it, ’cause with this gig you’re only ever as good as your last. So it’s all about preparation really. And trying to get a decent night’s sleep. Last night I was up four times (one of her brood is potty training).

S: MUUUUMMMEEEEEEE!

L: Yeah, so I’m hoping for a good night’s sleep tonight.

S: A lack of sleep sits on your nerves alright.

L: Sleep deprivation is a terrible thing, but you do get used to it. But when you have a big event like this coming up, it’s nice to be a little bit rested.

S: So you’ve got the kids primed for tomorrow night. Have you got any tips for calming yourself down in those situations?

L: I just think of the girls. If, God forbid, I made an absolute haims of it, in the whole scheme of things – yes I’d be embarrassed, but I still have the girls tomorrow. I still have two little healthy babies to go home to.

S: That’s what’s important.

L: Yes it’s very important and a huge opportunity – I feel flattered and privileged to be asked to host it on my own this year and let’s hope I do a good job… But when I think of the girls; Emelia said to me during the week, we were in France visiting my in-laws, and she said "Are you going back to work, mummy" and I said "Yeah I am, straight away the next day". She said "are you doing Xpose" and I said "Yeah I am, but I’m also doing a big awards show and I’ve to do it all on my own, so hopefully I’ll get some sleep.."

S: Prime them, yep.

L: Yep, "Mummy has to get some sleep for a couple of nights". So then she said, "Will you know anybody there?" And I said my sisters who do my hair and make up will be there, my Xpose girls will all be there, and she said "well, maybe you should just, when you walk out on the stage and you’re nervous, you just think about them and your family and friends that love you, and pretend they’re the only ones in the room – she’s FIVE!

S: That’s fiercely insightful for five.

L: yeah she’s five, and I was thinking – "Eh, OK, I WILL do that." When I was leaving this morning to come here and she said "are you presenting today, mummy" and I said "yeah, I’m doing some photos with the girls, that big show isn’t for two more nights" and she said: "Ok, well now remember what I said to you."

S: Aaah, she’s been here before.

L: And she’s right, so that’s what I’m going to think of the people who love me, and I’ll present to them.

You can see how Lorraine faired presenting the "Walkers Sensations" TV Now Awards on Sunday night on TV3 at 10.00pm. We wish her the very best of luck.

While I sloped on in to the girls allotted changing room to unwittingly perv over movie buff Lisa Cannon and Karen Coster getting changed (they were most accommodating, and even entertained my banal questions about their fake tanning regime), Alicia pounced on Glenda Gilson. Here’s what happened her end.

Xpose Live is approaching fast and the TV3 ladies were out in all their blazing array of colours to announce some special guest that will be attending the live show in the RDS. The Location was the private Residence Club on Stephens Green. It was 12:30 in the afternoon, I still had not woken up and myself and Sheena were greeted with an array of cocktails from headline sponsors Martini. We resisted the temptation, as hard as it was, and made our way in to one dark, busy and incredibly warm room. It was hard not to miss all the girls as they were the only ones dressed in bright blue, green, red yellow and lime mini, and I stress MINI, ensembles.

So down to business, after watching the girls stand outside holding Mr Matt Di Angelo by his slightly undersized shirt and Karen Koster making the big announcements, it was interview time. I had the pleasure of speaking with Glenda Gilson.

Alicia Coyle: First off, the TV Now Awards. Xpose are nominated for Favourite TV Show, but you are also nominated for Favourite Newcomer to Irish TV and Laura Whitmore is in there too.

Glenda Gilson: Yeah, it’s mad isn’t it? Laura is a lovely girl, I met her not so long ago at an awards ceremony in London and I said ‘You and me are up against each other’ and we had a good laugh about it. But Yeah she has done really well for herself, so I’m looking forward to seeing her again. It’s tough competition.

A. Have you got a dress yet to wear for the night?

G. God no, I’m such a last minute person, very unorganised *laughs* so, hopefully I will get something in time.

A. The Michael Buble interview, I have to mention it. It was very funny and he was most definitely flirting with you.

G. Ah yeah, it was great. He was fantastic, got on really well with him. The flirting was great and sure I was flirting back.

A. You have been in the job a while and we all know that you get on really well together, but it has been an absolute whirlwind for you, how does it feel?

G. Of course it has, it’s been madness and if you spent the day in that office you’d know exactly what we are talking about. I mean not even in the office, being a presenter you’re in the car, killing yourself to get back from town or where ever you’ve been. You have to get back edit the piece and we go live at 4 o’clock, so it’s tough. But, it’s brilliant, it’s the experience I’ve always wanted and I really could not ask for a better job. As you said the girls are great, and it is really only days like this that we get to work with each other. We usually only pass each other in the news room, we are all out and have to share the camera, so if I’m finished with it at 12, Aisling might take it at half 12. Then when we are back in TV3 we just say a quick ‘hey’ and then it’s put the headphones on and back to editing.

A. Also with Xpose Live, Will you be taking to the catwalk. After all that’s where you started.

G. God yeah I would love to, the buzz you get off the catwalk is just fantastic, and especially at an event like this where there will be a big long ramp. I would love to, even just wear one outfit, and go one stride on the catwalk.

A. When was the last time you were on the catwalk.

G. Oh god, about a year ago, before I started working on Xpose. I think that was the last time.

And that was that. Glenda was then rushing off back to Ballymount to edit a segment for the show. Short and sweet eh? And, if no one believes that myself and Sheena were there, you can see us sitting in the background of one of the camera shots from the show!

This is the Viking tradition, which still holds true, since these three countries are known for the similarity in culture and language. They are therefore more appealing for the locals, and Swedish girls know that the barriers that would otherwise come through dating beyond this home front are something that can be easily overcome. Therefore the major difference between Swedish girls and say Norwegian girls is the fact that their language is singsong. Of course, Swedish girls differ from Danish girls in the sense that their skin is not as pale as that of Danish girls.
