The new N52 Tullamore bypass has opened.
Taoiseach Brian Cowen will open the route at a special ceremony this afternoon.
It will also reduce delays for motorists on the N80 between Athlone and Portlaoise.
The 14km carriageway has seven bridges – including one across the Grand Canal – with numerous roundabouts and is expected to shorten journey times by at least 15 minutes.
